MacEwan Slope Stability Project

Background: This project covers the area from 38 to 62 MacEwan Park View NW. Cracks have developed in the eastbound lane of the roadway due to slope movement in the nearby greenspace. While nearby homes are not affected, the slope movement poses a risk to public safety and important infrastructure, including a TELUS manhole and an ATCO gas line.

To keep extra weight off the cracks, the eastbound lane of Macewan Park View will not allow parking during construction.

The City has monitored this slope since 1999. In 2023, the cracks widened, showing that the slope’s movement was increasing. A risk assessment found the slope stability to be poor, meeting the City’s criteria for remediation of slope. In November 2024, City Council approved $2 million in funding to address the issue and protect the community.

What to Expect:

Phase 1: Slope Stabilization (Approx. 2–4 weeks, starting late July)
Following a detailed assessment, the City has selected a stabilization method that includes:

  • Installing a row of screw piles along the crest of the slope, parallel to the ATCO gas line.

  • Constructing a continuous pile cap with a post-and-cable barrier on top of the piles.

Phase 2: Road Repair (Approx. 2–3 weeks, following stabilization)
Once slope work is complete, they will:

  • Repair/Replace curbs where needed.

  • Rebuild the road base and resurface the eastbound lane of MacEwan Park View N.W.

Traffic and Access Impacts

  • Lane closure: The eastbound lane will be closed throughout construction. Two-way traffic will be maintained via the westbound lane.

  • Work hours: Construction will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., daily including weekends.

  • Parking restrictions: Street parking along MacEwan Park View NW will be limited throughout the construction process.

  • Noise & vibrations: Some noise and vibration is expected. We’ll work to reduce disturbances as much as possible.

  • Pedestrian & vehicle detours: Detour routes and signage will be in place—please follow posted instructions.

Construction will take place from July-November 2025, with full site completion in June 2026. For FAQ or to contact the project team, click here.
