New Off Leash Area - Harvest Hills

There is a new public off-leash area in north central Calgary! The City has put up a temporary off-leash area at Country Hills Rd NW and Harvest Hills Boulevard that is now open to the public.

The designated area is marked in the white border.

The site is slated to be used in the future for housing, commercial, and Green Line infrastructure. The off-leash area will remain in place until portions of the site are developed in the near future. After that, a smaller off-leash space will remain as a portion of the area until the land is needed for the Green Line.

The idea to use this site as a temporary off-leash area was suggested by the Northern Hills Community Association, and has since been a collaboration between Transit, Parks and community.

Please keep our pets safe and follow off-leash area rules at this and all other off-leash area locations.

Why are we using this land for an off-leash area?

This site is reserved for Green Line, Calgary’s next light rail transit line. While timing for building future Green Line stages has yet to be determined, it’s likely the land won’t be needed for Green Line for a few years. Setting up the temporary Harvest Hills Off-Leash Area enables residents and their dogs to enjoy the area until it’s needed for Green Line.

When will the site be used for Green Line LRT?

Timing for building future Green Line stages has yet to be determined. Why has it taken so long for this site to be activated for community use? This site is reserved for Green Line, Calgary’s next light rail transit line. There was some uncertainty about when the site would be needed by Green Line until approval and funding for Stage 1 of Green Line (from Shepard to 16 Avenue N.) was achieved in 2021. While timing for building future Green Line stages has yet to be determined, it’s likely the land won’t be needed for Green Line for a few years. Setting up the temporary Harvest Hills Off-Leash Area enables residents and their dogs to enjoy the area until it’s needed for Green Line.

Why is only a portion of the land parcel being used?

The temporary Harvest Hills Off-Leash area doesn’t cover the entire five-acre parcel because this site is future home of housing, commercial, and Green Line light rail transit infrastructure. We expect the temporary Harvest Hills Off-Leash Area will remain on this site until portions of the site are developed in the near future. After that development, a smaller off-leash area will remain on a portion of the site until it is needed for Green Line. It has indeed taken a long time for this site to be activated for community use. That’s because there was some uncertainty about when the site would be needed by Green Line until approval and funding for Stage 1 of Green Line was achieved in 2021.
