Hanson Ranch Roundabout Survey Results

There were 508 total participants in the survey. 59% of participants voted to proceed with the permanent installation of the roundabout.

Given that the roundabout is situated in Hanson Ranch, I wanted to understand if the perspective of Hanson Ranch residents differed from those in Panorama or the broader community. When only Hanson Ranch residents’ replies were considered, preference for the permanent installation of the roundabout jumped to 69%.

In addition to being the overall preferred option, the roundabout allows for safer entry/exit from Hidden Creek Hts and it makes people drive slower than they did when it was a 2-way stop.

Based on the community feedback and my discussions with the Mobility department, we will proceed with the installation of the permanent roundabout.

Several themes emerged from the qualitative feedback that I would like to address:

1)  More education is needed on how to use a roundabout

Almost every participant commented on the importance of driver education. As suggested by several residents, I’ve included instructions on how to use the roundabout on the mailout to everyone in the community and on this webpage (below).

2)  Concerns about the size of the roundabout, signage and the location of the crosswalk

Mobility has informed us that the permanent installation will be slightly bigger than the temporary installation. The location of the crosswalk will be set back to promote better visibility and improved signage has been requested as well.

3)  Confusion about why a 4-way stop or Traffic light weren’t options

I appreciate that some residents didn’t like either option, but the survey presented the only options that the Mobility department would approve for installation. The intersection does not have a high enough warrant score for a Traffic Light and a 4-way stop would create significant cueing and congestion.

4)  Why a survey was used to gather feedback instead of an in-person townhall

The advantage of a survey is that it allows me to hear from more people and present the findings back to you. Over 500 people took the time to respond and I really appreciate the engagement.  You can read their qualitative feedback here.

If you still have questions or concerns, you can reach out to my office with your questions at ward03@calgary.ca. To speak with me directly, provide your phone number and I’ll arrange to call you.

What’s next?

Permanent installation of the roundabout will take place by the end of 2024.
