Beddington Trail x Hidden Creek Dr NW: Proposed Southbound Right Turn Lane

Update 4/22/23: Construction to be completed by the end of Summer 2023.

Background: In 2017, Mobility Operational Improvements constructed a dual southbound left turn movement from Hidden Creek Drive to eastbound Beddington Trail. With the dual southbound left turn lanes in place, overall intersection delay per vehicle for the AM peak period dropped by 54%. Queue lengths on Beddington Trail dropped by 60% to an average queue time.

Recommendations:

Although the dual southbound left turn movement was successful at reducing delay and queueing on Beddington Trail and Hidden Creek Drive, there have been concerns expressed by area residents about delay for southbound traffic turning right and pedestrian safety crossing Beddington Trail on the west side of the intersection. To address these concerns, a southbound right turn lane is proposed.

The site location of Hidden Creek Dr x Beddington Trail.

Benefits:

The addition of a southbound right turn lane will reduce delay for southbound right turning traffic by approximately 80%, which will effectively address congestion. Additionally, shortening the queue for drivers turning right will result in less aggressive use of the intersection and right turn, increasing overall pedestrian safety when crossing.

Notes:

The trees and wood structure in the boulevard south of the Circle K entrance will be removed to accommodate the right turn lane. The proposed southbound right turn lane will need to extend back to the Circle K entrance in order for right turning traffic to go around traffic queueing back in the through lane.

The construction will entail a bit of widening and noticeable road marking changes. The city will utilize the narrow strip of grass between the road and the sidewalk. They will be narrowing the northbound receiving lane by approximately 1 meter, which will provide enough space to accommodate the right turn lane. There will be road marking and grinding marks until the surface overlay can be poured.
